Certification of forest contractors (CeFCo)
Access to forest management certification and its benefits is more challenging for small forest holders who often face cost and procedural obstacles to certification. This three year project aims to facilitate certification of small private forests through both the certification of forestry contractors and the development of guidelines and tools for sharing certification responsibilities between forest owners and contractors.
The option to contract a certified forest service provider will allow forest owners to reduce the costs and work load of becoming certified. Essentially, a certified forestry contractor would assume responsibility for complying with the forest certification standards related to forestry operations, which are standards with which forest owners frequently have difficulty proving compliance. This will simplify the certification process for forest owners by reducing the total number of certification requirements with which they must prove compliance.
Certification will provide contractors an independent quality assurance for their customers, and potentially increase demand for their services. The project will develop a concept for the certification of forest contractors and small forest operations in four countries in Europe: Denmark, Sweden, Bulgaria, and Portugal. Awareness raising, training and promotion will follow at the national and European level.
