Three-step pathway

The certification of landowners and forest service enterprises under the proposed system of shared responsibility was tested in Denmark, Bulgaria, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.

Experiences and lessons learned through this project used to roll out this new concept of and general guidelines for contractor certification in Europe.

The process can be broken down into three steps outlined below.

Step 1 Analysis of forestry standards

National certification standards are analyzed and separated into those to be met by forestry contractors and those to be met by landowners. As a result, two check-lists are developed.

Step 2 Pilot testing for smallholders and forestry contractors

The check-lists are tested with forest owners and contractors. Options for certifying contractors and landowners, both as individuals or in groups are tested. As a result, the forest owner and contractor may receive a certificate. Lessons learned during the tests are taken into consideration to further improve the concepts being developed through the life of the project.

Step 3 Training and awareness

Training and awareness raising workshops are conducted in the pilot countries on the new model of sharing certification tasks between landowners and contractors. Project results are presented in EU-wide training workshops for all interested stakeholders.

Finally, national workshops are conducted, which include field visits to the forest, the sharing of lessons learned, and the presentation of more specific tools related to certification. A European-level workshop nearing project-end is conducted to present project results and provide further training.

Finally, national workshops will be conducted. These workshops will include field visits to the forest, the sharing of experiences, and the presentation of more specific tools related to certification. Also, a European-level workshop will be conducted to present project results and provide training.
