Three-step pathway

The process can be broken down into three steps outlined below.

Step 1 Analysis of forestry standards

National certification standards will be analyzed and separated into those to be met by forestry contractors and those to be met by landowners. As a result, two check-lists will be developed.

Step 2 Pilot testing for smallholders and forestry contractors

The check-lists will be pilot tested with forest owners and contractors. Options for certifying contractors and landowners both as individuals or in groups will be tested. As a result, the forest owner and contractor may receive a certificate. Lessons learned during the tests will further improve the concepts being developed through this project.

Step 3 Training and awareness

Training and awareness raising workshops will be conducted in Sweden, Denmark, Bulgaria, Portugal, and Spain on the new model of sharing certification tasks between landowners and contractors. Also, project results will be presented in EU-wide training workshops for all interested stakeholders.

Finally, national workshops will be conducted. These workshops will include field visits to the forest, the sharing of experiences, and the presentation of more specific tools related to certification. Also, a European-level workshop will be conducted to present project results and provide training.
